Ecumenical concert
Re: "Ecumenical singers to join voices" in the Nov. 24 issue:
Congratulations to Holy Name of Jesus Parish for hosting the archdiocese's "first-ever Ecumenical Advent Concert" on Dec. 7. No doubt a beautiful example of creating unity and harmony with our interfaith communities in the archdiocese.
But I beg to differ about "first" in the archdiocese! St. Mary's Parish, Chilliwack, has been actively engaged in ecumenical praise for more than a decade, during both Lent and Advent.
Most recently St. Mary's "New Life Choir" has joined with Lutheran, Anglican, and United Church choirs to foster interfaith relation in our Chilliwack community through prayer and song.
Our concerts are hosted by each denomination in rotation, with fellowship provided by the host community. These concerts have become a loved tradition in our community, and many lasting friendships have been formed.
Pope Francis is encouraging each one of us to "reach out" in our communities and to learn to praise God in unison. I encourage all our parishes in the archdiocese to join in this mission. As St. Augustine said, "A prayer sung is a prayer prayed twice."
