Catholic singles club turns 30

By Laureen McMahon

Archbishop J. Michael Miller, CSB, will be the guest of honour when St. Paul's Catholic Singles Club celebrates its 30th anniversary on May 24 at Holy Family Parish, 4851 Beatrice St. in Vancouver.

The archbishop will offer Holy Mass at 5 p.m. for members and join them for dinner at 7 p.m. in the parish hall. Music will be provided by Patrizia Coletta for a dance later in the evening, said club president Barry Desmond.

"We hope that our long-time and some original members will come to celebrate and reminisce about the good times and many successes, which include about 50 marriages between members who were first introduced at a club activity," he added.

St. Paul's Catholic Singles Club, said Desmond, has welcomed single and widowed Catholics over 35 who are free to marry in the Catholic Church since it was founded in 1978 by sisters Barbara Moffat and Florence Panichelli (Moffat).

Under the guidance of the first chaplain, Father Tom Nicholson, the Moffats, former Montini Club members from Holy Rosary Cathedral, thought it important that single and widowed Catholics have an organization where they could enjoy social and spiritual activities.

After Elsie Bevan and Mimi Moran (Cote) became co-directors, said Desmond, the club, which was located at St. Paul's Parish in Richmond opened its doors to parishes throughout the archdiocese. After an executive committee was formed, Antoinette Randon was chosen president and rules were drafted and approved.

"Our growth was rapid, and membership soon numbered over 100," said Desmond. "Today, members come regularly to events under the direction of our chaplain, Father Benno Burghardt. We invite newcomers to come along twice before deciding whether or not to join."

As well as monthly dances at the centrally-located Holy Family Parish hall, the club hosts barbecues, bowling parties, day excursions, potlucks, hikes and walks, theatre outings, prayer sessions, and retreats.

Former members who have married are invited to special yearly events including dinner dances, anniversaries, and New Year's celebrations, said Desmond.

More information about the 30th anniversary and joining St. Paul's Catholic Singles Club is available from Desmond, 614-327-5425, and Lena, 604-433-0055.
