Morgentaler decision
turns 20
By Laureen McMahon
This year is the 20th anniversary of the decriminalization of
abortion in Canada, which Dr. Henry Morgentaler is calling the
"crowning achievement" of his career.
Morgentaler made the remarks in a Jan. 14 interview in the National
Review of Medicine.
The price of his "success," however, has been the silencing of the
voices of 2 million babies since 1988.
To give a voice to these innocent victims, the Coquitlam Pro-Life
Society and several other pro-life groups are placing billboards
along highways and at transit stops to remind everyone of the
abortion holocaust.
At 7:30 p.m., on Jan. 1, a CPLS-sponsored billboard went up along
the Lougheed Highway near the Pitt River Bridge.
While funds have been raised to cover the billboard for four months,
CPLS spokeswoman Colleen Roy said they are appealing for donations
to help pay for the rest of the year. To help with funding, please
call CPLS at 604-721-7479.
Yvonne Douma, executive director of Pro Life BC, told The B.C.
Catholic that Surrey Delta Pro-Life has ordered a billboard and ads
for four transit shelters. To help, call 604-574-0225.
Pro-life societies in Chilliwack, Langley, and Abbotsford are also
putting up billboards. Phone numbers are 604-795-3091, 604-534-1195,
and 604-852-4623 respectively.
So far, said Douma, the only other location to report ordering
transit shelter ads and billboards in B.C. is Kelowna. For more
information, call 250-862-8202.
On Jan. 28, the exact anniversary of the court decision
decriminalizing abortion, pro-lifers will hold a candlelight vigil
outside Our Lady of Fatima Church in Coquitlam. A mini "field of
crosses" will be formed for two weeks: 274 crosses to represent the
number of abortions performed each day in Canada.
