Archbishop Roussin’s letter
The following letter to the clergy and lay faithful of the
Archdiocese of Vancouver has been released by Archbishop Raymond
Roussin, SM.
August 26, 2005,
To the Clergy and Lay Faithful of the Archdiocese of Vancouver
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I am writing to let you know that I will be away from my day-to-day
duties as your Archbishop for five to six months and to ask for your
generous support in prayer during this time.
This is the result of a clinical depression I am facing that has
developed over the last several years. My doctor is confident I will
make a full recovery if I take the time I need now, which is what I
intend to do. Although this is a personal medical matter, I have
decided to be frank with you in order to help remove some of the
stigma that is often wrongly and unfortunately associated with
depression. It is an illness and it is treatable.
My doctor has advised me that I should not receive visitors at this
time, and I am requesting that any pastoral or personal matters be
directed to the Chancery for handling. During my recuperation, the
business of the Archdiocese will be in the very competent hands of
my vicars, assisted when appropriate by the College of Consultors.
With your prayers to help me, I look forward to returning to work
with new strength as soon as possible.
Sincerely yours in Christ Jesus,
Most Reverend Raymond Roussin, SM
Archbishop of Vancouver
